In 2022, UNFPA supported the Civil Registration Services to publish the ninth annual Kenya Vital Statistics Report. The report showcases the current status and the progress made in the registration of vital events and identifies gaps and strengths within the registration system. It also tracks progress made towards the achievement of Kenya Vision 2030, the ICPD25 commitments and the SDGs targets.
As exhibited in the trends below, over the last five years, the completeness of birth and death registration in Kenya has improved tremendously towards achieving the SDG target and those of the United Nations Legal Identity Agenda (UNLIA) 2030. This has been attributed to the political goodwill of the Government and the financial and technical support of partners.
With the growing need for planning data at all levels since the introduction of the devolution system in Kenya in 2013, vital statistics have played a significant role in evidence-based planning through the understanding of levels, differentials and causes of mortality for monitoring trends, evaluating the impact and effectiveness of public health programs. Since 2013, UNFPA has provided technical assistance and financial support to the Civil Registration Department to collate and analyze data on the registration of births and deaths in Kenya. 2013 is also the year in which Kenya achieved a milestone in analyzing the vital statistics based on the UN Principles and Recommendations for a Vital Statistics System Revision. The data was published for the first time as the Kenya Vital Statistics Report (KVSR), and has provided the needed statistics for planning for the young population entering the education system among others.
UNFPA continues to support the analysis and publication of the KVSR on an annual basis even into the 10th country programme, which will be implemented in 2022- 2026. Click Here to download the Kenya Vital Statistics Report 2021.
