Gender equality is a human right. Women are entitled to live with dignity and have the freedom to make choices about their sexual and reproductive health and well-being. We believe that advancing gender equality is crucial in achieving sustainable development and reducing poverty. We foster initiatives that empower women and seek to leverage their transformative potential to contribute to improving the health and productivity of families and communities and improve prospects for the next generation.

Despite solid evidence showing the importance of empowering women in efforts to combat poverty, advance development, and take on the world's most pressing issues, gender equality is still a distant goal. For more than 30 years, UNFPA has advocated for women and girls, promoting legal and policy reforms and gender-sensitive data collection, and supporting initiatives that improve women's health and expand their choices in life.

What we do in Kenya

  • UNFPA works to strengthen the capacity of key actors and institutions at individual, community, and national levels to address discriminatory practices and root causes of structural inequalities affecting women, adolescents, and youth.
  • We support the implementation of the national acceleration plan for the elimination of FGM, the implementation of national policies and commitments on prevention and response to GBV, and the implementation and review of human rights recommendations related to gender equality and discrimination.
  • Our work also focuses on involving men as advocates against gender-based violence and empowering young people and female-led social enterprises to scale up activities in activism against gender-based violence.
  • We also collaborate with faith-based groups and cultural institutions to combat harmful practices such as Female genital mutilation, and child marriage.
