UNFPA Kenya was recognized for supporting the institutionalization of monitoring and evaluation in the Public Sector.

Organized annually by the National Monitoring and Evaluation Department of Kenya, the National Monitoring and Evaluation Week is a platform for national and international M&E practitioners to showcase their achievements. The 10th National Monitoring and Evaluation Conference featured an M&E awards ceremony during which individuals, government agencies, and organizations were recognized for their outstanding support and championing of monitoring and evaluation in Kenya

During this year’s awards held at the Tom Mboya Labour College in Kisumu, UNFPA Kenya was recognized for supporting the institutionalization of monitoring and evaluation in the Public Sector. UNFPA Executive Office Manager Mwongeli Muthuku received the award on behalf of the country office, presented by Mr. Saitoti Torome, Principal Secretary, State Department for Planning. “We are honored for this recognition which is a testament to the strong partnership between UNFPA and the Kenyan government in service to the Kenyan people,” said Ms. Mwongeli.

The support offered by UNFPA includes strengthening National and County M&E systems through capacity building on the establishment and operationalization of the electronic national and county integrated monitoring and evaluation systems (eNIMES/eCIMES). The e-NIMES/e-CIMES provides an effective data management component critical in generating real-time information for evidence-based decision-making.

The National Monitoring and Evaluation Week also presents an opportunity to discuss the generation and use of monitoring and evaluation findings that can inform policy decisions both at the national and county levels of government. This year’s forum included a session on monitoring and evaluation to track progress in the implementation of Kenya’s ICPD25 commitments.

UNFPA further took the opportunity to share good practices adopted by the country office in strengthening the supply chain for the delivery of reproductive health commodities up to the last mile. Kenya Medical Supplies Authority Senior Business Analyst Dennis Ndwiga showcased the Electronic Proof of Delivery (E-Pod) application, a digital innovation developed to help enhance efficiency and effectiveness in the delivery of family planning commodities and other essential medicines and supplies to health facilities in the country. The mobile app was developed as part of the “the last mile Kenya” programme implemented through a public-private partnership between KEMSA and Coca-Cola Beverage Africa with the support of UNFPA. “With the introduction of this App, we are able to ensure commodities are delivered in the correct health facilities, in the right quantities, and at the right time,” said Ndwiga.

UNFPA also showcased the use of Qualipharm, a mobile-based digital reporting tool developed in partnership with Health Strat. The tool tracks the consumption of family planning commodities at the county, sub-county, and facility levels. HealthStrat Technical Advisor Stanely Njoroge presented the functionalities of the tool which is used by commodity managers and pharmacists at public health facilities to electronically take stock of commodities consumed and place new orders.

Monitoring and Evaluation is a central function in UNFPA. It ensures the organization’s accountability for results and learning into the development of new policies, strategies, programmes and initiatives.
