Creating safe spaces for adolescents and young people in Kakuma and Kalobeyei Settlement
Those living in the camps and settlements, especially women and girls are at increased risk of gender-based violence, including female genital mutilation, early and forced marriage as well as other forms of sexual and gender-based violence.
UNFPA in Kenya supported by The Olympic Refuge Foundation, with a focus on Kakuma and Kalobeyei Integrated Settlement is creating safe spaces such as the Jiheshimu Corner. The safe spaces create an environment for adolescents and young people to interact, express themselves, and learn more about issues on Gender-Based violence. The spaces also create an opportunity to build their life skills and engage in sports such as Chess and Ludo.
The spaces increase awareness of gender-based violence by promoting prevention measures, training on the risk of gender-based violence in sports, and engaging young men and boys in encouraging the participation of girls in sports activities.
