Access to safe, voluntary family planning is a human right and is crucial to achieving gender equality and women empowerment. Kenya has made great strides in family planning which is evident through increased uptake and has exceeded its 2020 target of 58%.

We have been working to address barriers to accessing family planning services, including sociocultural factors such as lack of women's decision power on fertility preferences, inadequate resource allocation to family planning services, inadequate capacity to estimate family planning needs, weak supply chain management, and inadequate capacity at the facility level to provide the services, particularly long-acting and permanent family planning methods. Additionally, we address the need for comprehensive sexuality education in the school curriculum and low coverage of youth-friendly reproductive health services.

UNFPA Kenya is fully committed to supporting Kenya’s efforts to uphold the rights of individuals and additionally work towards ensuring women and girls have control over their bodies, lives, and futures. We continue to collaborate with our implementing partners,  government agencies, healthcare providers, and community organizations to ensure that every person has access to the information and resources they need to make choices that align with their reproductive goals.
