At the end of the year 2014, many countries will be contemplating just how much progress they have made towards achieving the millennium development goals. At UNFPA Kenya, we are proud of the result that we have recorded in the past year, even as we acknowledge just how much more work needs to be done, particularly in maternal and new-born health.
With just one year left for attainment of the MDGs, there are still many areas in kenya where the period of preganancy and labour still is very risky for both the mother and her baby. The maternal mortality ration in kenya is 488 for every 100,000 live births. In some countries such as mandera and garissa, the ratio is even higher.
